The petition of Paul Spooner of Nuthurst, Warwickshire, 16 December 1646

To the honourable Com[m]ittee Apoyntted for the safety of the County of Warwick and ye Citty and County of Couentry.

The humble petic[ion] of paul Spooner, lately a foote soldiar vnder Collonell Briges uof Warwick Castell;

Humbly sheweth yo[u]r hono[u]rs that yo[u]r poore petic[ioner] paul Spooner haueing binn A soldiar three yeares and vpwards in the p[ar]l[i]am[en]t seruis wass wounded vnrecouerably in that servis and in that manner that hee is vtterly vnable to stand or any waise to get on peny to help him selfe and now beeing disbanded hee hath not any more pay to reseue nor any meanes of his owne or frinds that are Able to releiue him his mother beeing A poore wyddow and no other meanes to leiue vpon but what shee gets by spining for ij d. A day att whose poore Cottage howse w[hi]ch standeth vpon the wast in the hamlet of Nuthurst your poore wounded and distressed petic[ioner] is the inhabittants of the said hamlet beeing all togeather vnable to Alow him any maintenance; ther beeing in the said hamlet but too freeholders and foure other dwellers that rent small Tenem[en]ts. And no les then seven poore Cottageres and all of them reseve allmes in w[hi]ch Respect your poore petic[ioner] wass forst to peticc[i]on the worshipfull Justices of the peace for this County Last quarter sessiones sessiones for relief but no order wass taken or any pay Appoyntted for {illegible} the maintenance of yor poore petic[ioner] and wounded soldiar: his humble sute and desire therefore is that yo[u]r hono[u]rs would fauorably bee pleased to Commisserate his distres. And to send him now som pr[e]sent mony By this Barer Edward Wood on of the Affore said hamlet That he perish not for want of releife. And allso That yo[u]r hono[u]rs would bee pleaseed to order and desire that your poore petic[ioner] and wounded soldiar may reseue monthly Alowance in sum place of this County where yo[u]r hono[u]rs shall and wil bee pleased To Appoynt (According to ordenance and decree of p[ar]l[i]am[en]t in that Case p[ro]vided) dureing the tearme of his life w[hi]ch in respect of his vncurable wounds and greate weekenes is not like to bee long. And your poore petic[ioner] and wounded soldiar shall in all duty bee bound to pray for yo[u]r hono[u]rs good healthes & prosperities.

In Consideration of this petic[i[on We desire Mr Basnett to pay to this bearer the som[m]e of Thyrty shillings to be sent to Paul Spooner the Peticoner for his pr[e]sent maynten[an]ce.
