The petition of Matthew Winter of Skipton on Swale, North Riding of Yorkshire, 1685

To the right worship[fu]ll the kings ma[jes]tyes Justices of the peace for the north ridd[ing] in the County of Yorke.
The humble petition of Matthew Winter of Skipton upon Swaile humbly sheweth that your petitioner hath beene a souldger in the late king of blessed memory his magisties service under the Command and in the Company of Sir Thomas Glemond Coranall and that he hath beene allwayes loyall and faithfull both to his late magisty and to his magisty that now is: and that your peti[ti]oner hath beene att many fights in the said service and there in received many wounds whereby he is now disabled from working and he having nothing to maintaine himselfe and his familye but his working it being very small in regard of his impotent and lameness:
Therefore your peti[ti]oner doth humbly beseice your worship that you would be pleased to take the same into your serious Consideration and the Treasurers for the north ridding lame souldgers of the north ridding may be ordered to pay him som[e]thing yearely towards the mentinance of his fammyly that they be not forced to beeg for there future livelyhood and your petitioner shall daily pray for you
