The petition of Mathew Roberts of Denbigh, Denbighshire, 8 October 1667
To the Right Wo[rshipfu]ll the Justices of the peace for the County of Denbigh.
The Humble pettic[i]on of Mathew Roberts of Denbigh tayler.
Sheweth
That yo[u]r pet[i]t[ione]r voluntarily retayned himselfe a private souldier vnder the Comand of Maior Doulben in the regim[en]t of Collonell Hugh Wynne; and according to comand, marched into the Citty of Chester and there contynued duringe the whole tyme of the seidg; where yo[u]r pet[i]t[ione]r upon his Ma[jes]t[y]s service in defence of the said Citty receaued some hurts and Wounds and towards the Latter end of the said seidg suffered much misery for want of food and rayment; And after the said Citty was delivered over to the then vsurpinge power, yo[u]r pet[i]t[ione]r returned home to the towne of Denbigh afforesaid, and ever sithence contynued a true and faithfull subiect to his Ma[jes]tie without revoltinge, but now beinge in greate poverty and hauing not wherewithall to mayntaine himselfe, his wife, and five small Children
Yo[u]r pet[i]t[ione]r humbly prayes yo[u]r good Wor[shi]ps to Comisserate his present Condic[i]on and to graunt him what yearly penc[i]on yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps shall thinke meete of the maimed souldiers moneys towards his, his wife and childrens releefe and maintenance. And yo[u]r pet[i]t[ione]r shall ever pray &c.
This poore man hath serued in the regiment as is affore certified
