The petition of Mary Yarrington of Hereford, Herefordshire, 1674

To the Right Wor[shipf]ull Thomas Simonds Esq[ui]r[e] Maior of the Cittie of Hereford and to the rest of the Justices of the Peace of and for the same Cittie.
The humble Petic[i]on of Mary Yarrington of the said Cittie the Relicte or late wife of Samuell Evans late of the same Cittie Turnor deceased and now the wife of Walter Yarrington
Sheweth
That yo[u]r pet[itione]rs said late husband Samuell Evans (being in his lifetime a true subiect as a drumme or drum maior in his late Ma[jes]ties service of ever blessed memory King Charles the first and a Freeman of the same Cittie and [illegible] a p[er]son whoe was ready and instrumentall vpon all occasions att the Comaund of the said Cittie & Cittizens thereof) left yo[u]r pet[itione]r a Charge of Children behinde him to mainetaine and farr indebted w[hi]ch is not vnknowne to most of the said Cittizens
That yo[u]r pet[itione]r hath now one of his sonnes whose name is James Evans that is fitting & Capable to be put to some Trade w[i]thin the said Cittie but yo[u]r pet[itione]r for ye reasons aforesaid hath not wherew[i]th to doe it (although there is a M[aste]r now ready to take him appr[e]ntice Soe be it yo[u]r pet[itione]r may haue wherew[i]thall to help her to place him.
Wherefore she humbly implores yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps That yow would be pleased out of the bowells of Comerserac[i]on Order yt she might haue some of Mr Harpers money given for that purposes for to helpe for to place the said Boy According to the donors will
And in soe doeing both shee and her poore Children shall ever pray &c
