The petition of Mary Hatton of Nantwich, Cheshire, Trinity 1651

To ye right w[orshi]p[fu]l ye Justices of Peace att this Sessions.
The humble Petic[i]on of Mary Hatton of Wichmalbank widdow.
Sheweth
That W[illia]m Hatton eu[er] a constant and true friend to the State & cause marched a listed sold[ie]r vnder ye com[m]and of Captaine Robert Wright to ye siege against Chester; where yo[u]r Poore pet[itione]rs husband W[illia]m Hatton afores[ai]d then died in ye seruice. And now Right w[orshi]p[fu]l yo[u]r Poore Pet[itione]r & children being destitute of any other meanes, saue such as since her dear husbandes death shee hath yearly receiued by Pension, being admitted six yeares since a Pensioner & so continued, being iudged by all; a fitt obiect to receiue such an allowance, haueing nothing els in ye world to liue or depend vpon, but likely if ye s[ai]d yearely Pension shold be taken fro[m] her (w[hi]ch Lord forbid) to turne her children vpon the Towne, & become her selfe an obiect of charity & consequently of distress & misery.
May yo[u]r w[orshi]ps therefore even for ye Lordes sake gratiously bee pleased, since yo[u]r poore Pet[itione]rs deare husband died in ye seruice & ye poore widdow & fatherles children likely to be lost and to perish, shold ye yearely pension cease, that haueing nothing els in ye world to depend vpon, & without w[hi]ch shee & her children are vtterly vndone, yt shee may not loose her dear husband & Pension too, but to grant yt shee as form[er]ly receiue ye s[ai]d yearly Pension & she as for eu[er] bound shall for eu[er] Pray &c
