The petition of Mary Cowly of Mere, Wiltshire, Hilary 1662

To the Right wo[rshipfu]ll Justices of {the Peace} of the County of Wilts[hire]
The humble peti[ti]on of Mary Cowly widd[ow] the relict of Leonard Cowly deceased
<Sheweth>
That your peti[t]ioners husband in this seruice of the late King lost his life as by the certificate appears and left your petitioner w[i]th fower Small Children destitute of all comfort of this worlde yet by hir greate industrie and gods good prouidence her selfe and three of her children continues to this day but your Petitioner is nowe growne old and her strength decayed and Chiefly her sight that she is in apparent hazard to perish in her old age vnlesse some compassion be shewed to her by yo[u]r Wo[rshi]pps
Humbly prayeth that and seing god hath pleased to restore the King to his right and the Kingdome to there peace and every good man his quiett that yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps will will please to grant yo[u]r petitioner a small pention out of the County stocke and shee will always pray for for you
These are humbly to certifie that Leo{nard Cowly} of Meere in the County of Wilts[hire] Taylor {illegible} of the late warrs a soldier for his la{te Majesty under the} command of S[i]r George Vaughan dese{illegible} served his said Ma[jes]tie vnder Collonell {illegible} master of his Regim[en]t and vnder him {illegible} west
