The petition of Margrett Burrowes of Barthomley, Cheshire, Epiphany 1648

To the right worshipfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace of the County of Chester.

The humble Petition of Margrett Burrowes of Bartomley in the County aforesaid Widow

Humbly sheweth

That wheras yo[u]r Petitioner is inforced by reason of her great wants and necessities to make her poor estate and condition known vnto yo[u]r worshipps occationed by the late warr, wherin her husband was in a most barberous and outragious manner slaine at the Church of Bartomley to the great greife and overthrow of yo[u]r said Petitioner who in his life time was a diligent and painefull labourer and endeavoured to maintaine himselfe and Family by his industry and paines takeing in an honest and Commendable manner, and being then left with tow [sic.] small Children vtterly striped of all she had and destitute of Freinds being of abilitie to releiue and succour her or her Children in this their great distresse and miserie and alsoe by reason of the great scarcitie and dearth of Corn and other Commodities wherby she was not able to supply her own and her Childrens wants with all and is likly to be exceedingly impoverished and cast into a low estate of miserie vnlesse yo[u]r worships doe commiserate her Condition and take course as in yo[u]r wisdomes yow shall thinke fit to pr[e]vent the same.

May it therefore please yo[u]r worships to take the pr[e]misses into serious consideration and in tender pitie of her wants and necessities yow would be pleased to order that she may haue some pention out of the moneyes allowed towards the releife of widowes and orphanes in that Case provided and as yow thinke most agreeable to Charitie towards the releueing and succouring of her and her Children And yo[u]r said Petitioner as in dutie bound and wee whose names are subscribed shall dayly pray that yo[u]r worships may in good health and prosperitie long continue
