The petition of Lewis ap Hugh ap Evan of Llaneilian, Denbighshire, 2 October 1677

To the r[igh]t worshippfull his Majesties Justices of the peace assembled at this present generall quarter sessions of the peace held for the county of Denbigh.
The humble Peticon of Lewis ap Hugh ap Evan Carpenter of Llanelian
Humbly shewing, That yore poore peticoner aged 70 yeares, being blynd, deafe, & lame, Faithfully served his late majestye, King Charles the first of ever blessed memorie in his late wars, the space of 3 yeares & half, vnder the Command of the Right honorable Colonell Lord Diggbey & Sir Thomas Hangmer and alsoe vnder severall other commands in the said service, ever continued faithfull to his trust, & never deserted the same, by takeing vp armes against his said late majestye or his majestye that now is, but always continued loyall. And was wounded in the said service, shott in his thigh, lost one of his eyes, and the vse of one of his hands, whereby he is not onely now grown very poore & Indigent & disabled in body for work, but alsoe it pleased God lately to call from him his wife, who left him more then 5 li. in debt, yor peticoner being left not onely destitute hope of any hope, help or succour in this his declyneing age, but alsoe is vndoubtedly likely to perrish through want if not relieved (The presmisses being tenderly considered).
May it therefore please yor worshipps in Commisseration of your Peticoner his most sad, delporeable & despicable condicion, to grant him to be listed into the number of the maimed soldiers of this county & to allow him a yearely pension towards his relief & future maintenance.
And as in duty bounden yor peticoner shall ever pray for yor worshipps health & happiness & hereafter.
