The petition of John Warton of Moston, Cheshire, Trinity 1651

To the Wor[shi]p[fu]ll the Justices of this County at their Quarter Sessions houlden at Namptwich

The humble petic[i]on of John Warton of Moston in the sayd County husbandman.

Humbly sheweth vnto your Wor[shi]ps That your petic[i]on[e]r hath beene a souldier in the Parliam[en]t service duringe the tyme of the late Warrs, and for the most p[ar]te menteyned himselfe in the sayd service, and was both active and faithfull therein, as is well knowne to many both officers and souldiers late in S[i]r William Brearetons Brigade But havinge to his landlord ye Baron of Kinderton whoe has beene of the adverse p[ar]ty, & maligninge yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r by reason of his aforesayd fidelity (as yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r verry well Conceaves) And beinge a greate man in the Country and your petic[i]on[e]r in debt and pouerty, hath cast yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r out of a Tenem[en]t in Moston aforesayd w[hi]ch your petic[i]oners Ancesto[r]s haue holden by lease for many descents, and alsoe out of a poore Cote which your petic[i]oner had lately repayred all or the most p[ar]te of it standinge vpon the Wast, insomuch as your poore petic[i]on[e]r togeather with his weife and Children are now Constrayned to lye in the open Lane wheare they are like to starue and p[er]ish when winter Comes vnlesse your Wor[shi]ps please to cause some p[ro]uision to bee made for them in the meane tyme.

May it therefore please your Wor[shi]pps to Consider our sad and lammentable Condic[i]on and to order that yo[u]r poore petic[i]on[er]s may erect some small Cottage vpon the Wast in the open lane called Booth lane for the succo[u]r and preservac[i]on of his sayd poore weife & Children And yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r as in duety bound will euer pray for your Wor[shi]pps health & happines.
