The petition of John Paterson of Altrincham, Cheshire, 4 November 1661

To the right Hon[oura]ble the justices of the peace at this present sessions {a}ssembled
The humble petic[i]on of John Paterson of Altringham

That yo[u]r petitioner being borne in Scotland and there seruinge as a soldier vnder the Com[m]and of Major Keigh Captaine of a troope of horse in the regiment of Major generall Midleton, he vnder the com[m]and and Com[m]anders afforesayd came into England at that time when his Ma[jes]tie (whom god long preserue) marched out of Scotland into England and so to Worcester, where this petitioner was shot through the bodie w[i]th a muskett bullet, besides seuerall other wounds, w[hi]ch he then and there receiued. Now so it was that yo[u]r petitioner some while after traueileinge towards his natiue Country, and beinge come as farr as Altringham in this Countye, was not able to traueile any further, by reason of his wounds, and beinge there releeued by the charitie of diuers charitable & well-disposed people, he was after a longe time cured of his wounds; and since that tyme hath by his hand labour maintained himselfe, not beinge chargeable to any. But beinge now married, & charged w[i]th the maintenance of a wyfe and two younge children, and troubled at euery change of weather w[i]th paine ariseinge from his former hurts, gott in and for his Ma[jes]ties seruice, so that he is not able to follow his calling and labo[u]r, nor maintaine his familie as formerlie.
May it therefore please yo[u]r Hon[ou]rs to admit this yo[u]r poore petitioner as a pentioner, and to allow him such yearly maintenance duringe life, as in yo[u]r discretions you shall judge fitt: And this petitioner as in dutie bounde, will euer pray
