The petition of John Norman of Tavistock, Devon, 1686

To the Right Wor[ship]full his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace for the County of Devon
The humble Petic[i]on of John Norman of Tavistocke in the said County Fuller
Humbly Sheweth
That yo[u]r Petic[i]oner in the late unhappy Warr Faithfully served his most sacred Ma[jes]tie King Charles ye First of ever blessed memory under the Com[m]and of Colonell Wenford & Capt[ain] Windebanke in the North of England & afterwards under the Comand of Colonell Tremaine & was in Pendennis Castle to the tyme itt surrendred & after was comitted to the County Goale att Exon for refuseing to serve Oliver Cromwell ag[ains]t the late King Charles the second of Immortall memory And in the said Warrs yo[u]r Petic[i]oner received severall wounds in his head & other p[ar]ts of his boddy & never deserted his Ma[jes]ties Service but continewed Faithfull to his trust & never tooke upp Armes ag[ains]t his Ma[jes]tie And now by reason of his said wounds & Age he is now utterly disabled for the getting his Mayntenance & livelyhood as heeretofore he hath endeauored to doe Wherefore yo[u]r Poore Peticon[e]r humbly beggs That yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps would be pleased to Commiserate his age & very sad condic[i]on by granteing him his Ma[jes]ties Penc[i]on yearely towards the releiffe of his pr[e]sent & future necessityes
And yo[u]r Petic[i]oner shall ever pray for yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps Temporall & Eternall happynes
