The petition of John Jordon of Denbury, Devon, 1698

To ye Right Wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of ye peace att ye Sessions holden att ye Castle of Exon
The humble petition of John Jordon of ye p[ar]ishe of Denberry humbly showeth &c.
That whereas yo[u]r poor petitioner having been a soldier vnder King Charles ye first & vnder every King since vnto this tyme & having received severall hurts as his eye strickt out of head w[i]th a muskett & other damages I rec[eive]d in my long lyeing in ye Cold w[hi]ch causeth now great akeing in my bones being almost 80 yeares old ame therefore totally disabled to get my living, yo[u]r poor petit[ioner] was a soldier for his Ma[jes]tie at Pendennes Castle & kept in soe Close soe long there that hee was Forced to eate doggs & ratts & catts to satisfy hunger, w[hi]ch hardnes w[i]th ye former often lyeing in feild in greivous Colde wether ame altogether disabled to gett any mainetenans for my old Feeble body. My Request therefore to yo[u]r Worships is that you would bee pleased to grant to yo[u]r poor petitioner some yeirely sallary towards ye mainetenans of my body that little tyme I have to live in this world yo[u]r poor petitioner shall dayly pray for yo[u]r worshipps health & prosperity.
