The petition of John Jones of Chulmleigh, Devon, 1686

To the Right wor[ship]f[ul]l his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace att their gen[er]all Quarter Sessions held att the Castle of Exon for the said County
The humble petic[i]on of John J{ones} of Chumley in the said County
<Humbly sheweth>
Unto yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps That whereas yo[u]r poore pet[itione]r in the last vnhappy warrs faithfully served his most sacred Ma[jes]tie King Charles the first of blessed memory, vnder the Com[m]and of S[i]r Ames Pollard Barr[one]tt – and ever since hath behaved himselfe very faithfull & Loyall in w[hi]ch said warrs yo[u]r pet[itione]r received seu[er]all wounds in his body, by meanes of w[hi]ch hee was disabled of getting A Livelyhood As form[er]ly he did, And whereas shortly afterwards vpon A Compl[ain]t of the same vnto his then Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace obtayned his now Ma[jes]ties penc[i]on of 4 li. p[er] Ann[um] & duly received the same vntill the last dutch warrs, then hee hadd abated of his said yerely penc[i]on of 4 li. the some of Fourty shillings. Now soe it is may itt please yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps that yo[u]r pet[itione]r being now growen very Aged & weake of body by reason of the wounds aforesaid, hath more need of 4 li. p[er] Ann[um] then ever he had. Therefore humbly prayeth yo[u]r wor[shi]pps to Consider his Condic[i]on by graunting him an Addic[i]on to his now penc[i]on of Fourty shillings And hee will ever pray &c
