The petition of John Hyde of Matley, Cheshire, Easter 1649

To the right wor[shipfu]ll the Justic[e]s of peace and quoru[m] for the Com[m]on wealth of England within the Countie Palatine of Chester now sitting at the generall Sessions at Northwhich in the same Countie.
The humble petition of John Hyde of Matley within the same Countie.
Humblie
Sheweth that whereas yo[u]r poore petitioner at the beginning of theise vnhappy distractions when the Lord Strange came first against Manchester was comaunded by the [two illegible words] Colonell Duckenfeild (amongst divers others) to goe with him to the aid and assistance of Manchest[er] aforesaid against the Lord Strange where he your petition[e]r was maimed of the one of his hands and thereby disinabled to follow his vocation and calleing to mainteyne himselfe his wife and seaven poore children and afterwards when Lord Goring and his Army came through Darbishire and part of Cheshire and so into Lancashire, he your poore petitioner was so miserably plundered by then that they left not your petitioner anything either for bedd or backe: So that your said poore petitioner his wife and children are in greate [illegible] exigencie and want being destitute both of clouthes for bedd and backe and also in greate distresse for meate and other necessaries being likely to perish with hunger and cold vnles yo[u]r wor[shi]pps forth of your pious and chartable considerations will be pleased to afford them some reliefe for their mainteynance.
Your said poore peitioner humblie prayeth yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps the pr[e]misses tenderly considered that you would be pleased to afford him some such lyke mainteynance as is afforded and alowed to maimed soldiers and what other reliefe you in yo[u]r wisedomes and out of Charitie shall thinke meete So shall your petitioner as in dutie bounden ever pray &c.
The contents of this Petition be true and an Extraordinary charitable act it will be to releif the Petitioner as is done to other maimed Souldiers in the like case witnes my hand herto this
