The petition of John Huntington of South Tawton, Devon, 29 September 1688

To the right worshipfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace of & for the County of Devon at this pr[e]sent Sessions held at the Castle of Exon
The Humble petic[i]on of John Huntington of Southtawton in the said County husbandman
Sheweth that yo[u]r peticon[e]r serued his Late Ma[jes]ties Kinge Charles the first of euer blessed memory vnder the Com[m]and of S[i]r Nicholas Slanninge, Major Fulford & S[i]r Allen Absley as A Serjeant & foot Souldier for the Space of fower yeeres, dureing which tyme nor since deserted the Kings seruice, & therein Indured much Hardshipp which now with his old age hath brought him not able to gett his Liueing but is Inforced to beg releiffe of the p[ar]ish.
Wherefore yo[u]r poore petic[i]on[e]r prayeth yo[u]r wor[shi]ps to take the pr[e]mises into Considerac[i]on & to Afford him such pension as this Court doth ussually giue, & yo[u]r peticon[e]r shall euer as he is bound to doe pray for yo[u]r health &c
