The petition of John Hobbs senior of Easterton, Wiltshire, 16 July 1661

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll his Ma[jes]t[y’]s Justic[e]s of Peace at the gen[er]all quarter Sessions of the Peace holden at Warminster the 16th day of July Anno D[o]m[in]i 1661.

The humble Petic[i]on of John Hobbs [illegible] th’elder of Esterton in the p[ar]ish of Markett Lavington in the Countie of Wiltes[hire] husbandm[an]

Humbly sheweth, That whereas yo[u]r Pet[itione]r was a Trouper in ye late kings service vnder Capt[ain] Hugh Grove, in the Regim[en]t of Col[one]l S[i]r George Vaughan, in Prince Maurice his Brigade, almost Two yeares.

In w[hi]ch service yo[u]r Pet[itione]r lost two horses of his owne worth 16 li. And lost one of his fingers by a wound in his hand, and received other hurts to the disabling of him to strive in the world for his maintenance as in former tyme he could. And was plundred of his goods by the Parliam[en]t forces to the value of 10 li. And was Imprisoned at Winchester by the Parliam[en]t forces, by the space of 2 monethes, where it cost him 20 li before he could gett out All w[hi]ch doe amount to his damage & hindrance to ye summe of 100 li.

Yo[u]r Pet[itione]r humbly prayeth yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps to be pleased to graunt him a yearely Penc[i]on, or a sume of money in hand to supply his p[re]sent necessities, As in yo[u]r wisedomes you shall thinke meete. And yo[u]r Pet[itione]r shall ever pray for yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps health and happynesse &c.

Wee whose names are heere underwritten doe certify that wee doe know that the Petition[e]r John Hobbs abouesaid was a Trouper in the late Kings service under Capt[ain] Hugh Grove in the Regiment of Col[one]l S[i]r George Vaughan in Prince Maurice his Brigade for the time aboue mentiond or thereabout; and that hee hath sufferd the wounds & as wee beleiue the losses & imprisonment mentiond in his Petition: In testimony whereof wee haue heereunto subscribd o[u]r names
