The humble petition of John Heywood of Sampford Courtney in Devon

Sheweth

That y[ou]r said petition[e]r served his last Ma[jes]tie King Charles the first of blessed memory in all the late vnhappy warrs vnd[e]r the com[m]and of Capt[ain] Gidley from the beginning of the said warrs vntill the end thereof in all w[hi]ch time y[ou]r petition[e]r behaved himselfe as A faithfull soldier & subject and amongst other hardshipps and hurts y[ou]r petition[e]r was Shott in his left legg and other hurts yett visible w[hi]ch in y[ou]r petiton[e]rs age of 62 and vpwards are become more grevious than formerly And y[ou]r petion[e]r being by this hon[ou]rable C[ou]rt graunted A penc[i]on of 40 s. p[er] annu[m] & receiuing the same for some yeares; There being about 13 yeares since an enquiry made att Holsworthy by S[i]r Will[ia]m Morrice and John Arscott Esq[ui]re of the pention[e]rs within the diuision y[ou]r petion[e]r nott being then p[ro]uided att soe great a distance to p[ro]ue his service & demeanor therein & having noe Certificate fro[m] any of the offic[e]rs vnd[e]r whome y[ou]r petition[e]r served s[ai]d 2 Justices to the did take of 20 s. p[er] annu[m] of ye s[ai]d 40 s.

Now y[ou]r petition[e]r being growne aged & his hurts become more greivious & for yt the said pent[i]on of 40 s. p[er] annu[m] was abated for yt y[ou]r petion[e]r came vnp[ro]uided to p[ro]ue his service, Y[ou]r pet[itione]r humbly prayes this hon[ou]rable C[ou]rt to consider the p[re]misses & to giue y[ou]r petition[e]r such further allowance as y[ou]r wor[shi]pps shall thinke p[ro]p[er]

& y[ou]r petition[e]r shall euer pray

<Wee are well assured by Mr Gidley & other credible informac[i]ons as well of the constant Loyalty of the Petition[e]r as his civill demean[ou]r since and conceiue the pention first graunted by the Sessions had nott been abated had his demean[ou]r & service appeared vpon the review>
