The petition of John Handley of Dunham on the Hill, Cheshire, 8 July 1656

To the Right wor[shipfu]ll the Justices of Peace att the Quarter Sessions held in Namptw[i]ch For the Countie of Chester the viiith day of July 1656.
The humble petic[i]on of John Handley of Dunham on ye hill miller p[ar]ish of Thorneton in ye said Countie souldier.
<Sheweth> That yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r was chosen to serve the Com[m]on wealth of England vnder the com[m]and of Captaine Roberte Pike att or against the comeinge in of Charles Steward kinge of Scotts wheare demeaninge himselfe Faithfully and in service att Warrington Bridge was by an enemie shott & maymed in the Arme [several illegible words] for cure wheareof did longe tyme continue vnder Chirurgions hands in hope to recou[e]r Butt to the greate damage of yo[u]r petic[i]oner & almost vndoinge (beareinge his owne charges) hee beeing now vnable to worke or follow husbandrie haveinge wife and Fower small children and nothing to releeve them sittinge on great rucke rente is vtterly like to p[er]ish & bee vndone.
May itt please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps to take the pr[e]misses into yo[u]r wife & favorable considerac[i]on and towards the releife of yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r his former great costs & ympotencie and maintaynance of said wife, and poore infants to graunte to him a maymed souldiers allowance or pention yearely as in yo[u]r discretions thought Fitt
And yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r will pray &c
Wee whose names are subscribed haue seene & p[er]vsed this pet[itioner]: and doe know and beeleeue the contents thereof to bee true wittnesse our hands.
