The petition of John Fowler of Uplyme, Devon, 1686

To the right Wo[rshipfu]ll S[i]r Thomas Carew and to the rest of the honourable Justices of the peace now sitting att the Castle of Exon for the County of Devon
The humble petic[i]on of John Fowler of Uplime in the County of Devon
Humbly Sheweth
That whereas yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r having Lost the vse of his Left hand in the Service of his late most Sacred Majesty King Charles the first of ever blessed Memory and having formerly exhibited a petic[i]on for releife therein yo[u]r poore petic[i]on[e]r was granted the sum[m]e of Three pounds Tenn Shillinges yearly which yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r received accordingly vntill the Late Dutch warr and then it was reduced to Twenty Shillinges yearly to the great Impoverishm[en]t of yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r and to his vtter vndoeing vnlesse yo[u]r Worshipps will Consider his distresse
Therefore yo[u]r peticon[e]r humbly prayes yo[u]r Worshipps to Continue vnto him his form[e]r pay of 3 li. 10 s. And yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r as in duty bound shall dayly pray &c.
10 s. at present & 50 s. after by quarterly paim[en]ts
