The petition of John Elmes of Chichester, Sussex, April 1674

To the Right worshipp[fu]ll the Justices of peace at the gen[er]all Quarter Sessions to be held for the westerne part of this Coutie. Annoq[ue] d[o]m[ini] 1674;
The humble petic[i]on of John Elmes of the Citty of Chichester and Countie aforesaid Labourer:
Humbly Sheweth:
That whereas yo[u]r poor petic[i]on[er] was a Souldier and Served in armes in his late Ma[jes]ties Servis vnder the comand of S[i]r Christopher Lewkenor; And continued in his said Ma[jes]ties servis for the space of one yeare and a halfe; dureing which said time yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r was in severall ingagem[en]ts vizt; two at Newbery one at Panbury and a other att Shirriton downe; and at last was disbanded in Cornwall. And now yo[u]r poor petic[i]on[e]r being in yeares and his labour begines to fayle him, doe humbly beseech yo[u]r worshipps to take his condic[i]on in to yo[u]r Considerac[i]on, and alow him a smale penc[i]on what in yo[u]r worshipps wisdom shall be thought most meete:
And yo[u]r poor petic[i]on[e]r shall Ever pray:
Ordered yt the Tre[asure]rs pay 40 s. p[er] ann[um] as desired.
