The petition of John Elcocke of Smallwood, Cheshire, Easter 1652

To the right wo[rshipfu]ll the Justices of the Peace at this Sessions

The humble Petic[i]on of John Elcocke

Sheweth.

That whereas yo[u]r said Pet[itioner] was a souldier at the battle of Worcester beinge hyred for the towneshippe of Smalwood by Mr Dutton (with whom hee then lived) and Richard Furnivall the said Mr Dutton wives sonne, They promisinge that hee should be as well paid at his returne as any souldier who went out of that towneshippe And whereas sithence the said battle the rest of the souldiers w[hi]ch went out of the said towneshippe haue received [illegible] Twenty shillinges a peece for advance mony without any reluctation.

And whereas yo[u]r Pet[itioner] hath damaunded seu[er]all tymes the said sume of Tenne Twenty shillinges for advance mony accordinge as his fellowe souldiers had received, from the said Mr Dutton & Richard Furnivall w[hi]ch yett they haue & still doe deny to pay yo[u]r said Pet[itioner] hopeinge hee p[er]formed as good service at the said battle as any of his said fellowe souldiers

Wherefore the humble request of yo[u]r Pet[itioner] is, That in regard of the pr[e]misses yo[u]r wor[shi]pps would be pleased to grant him an Order to receive the said Tenn Twenty shillinges for to advance from the said Mr Dutton & Richard Furnivall accordinge as the rest of the souldiers of the said towneshippe haue had. And yo[u]r Pet[itioner] shall ever pray &c
