The petition of John Churchward of Stoke Gabriel, Devon, 1683

To the Right Worshipfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace for the County of Devon att their Generall quarter Session of the Peace held att the Castle of Exon for the said County

The Humble Petition of John Churchward of Stoke Gabriell in the said County Miller

Humbly Sheweth

That whereas your Petitioner in the late vnhappie warr faithfully served his most sacred Majestie King Charles the first of ever blessed memory vnder the commande of the Right Honorable Sir Edward Seymour Barronett about fower years, and received two wounds, one in the arme, and one in the head, and after recovery of those wounds served fower years more vnder the command of Sir Henry Cary knight, where he received an other wound in the head, Captaine Nicholas Newman being then his Captaine, By reason of which wounds he is now disabled for the getting of his Maintenance and livelyhood, hauing euer since the discontinueance of the sayd vnhappie warr honestly endeavored the getting of his living as his health and strength permitted him, allwayes behaving himselfe vnder the Gouerment of his Ma[jes]tie our Soueraigne Lord the King that now is, as a faithfull and loyall subject. Wherefore your poore Petitioner humbly begs That your Worships would be pleased to commiserate his aged and very sad Condic[i]on by granting him his Ma[jes]ties pention yearly, toward the releife of his great necessitie, and your Petitioner shall euer pray for your Worships temporall and eternall happines
