The petition of Joell Hebberden of Oving, Sussex, January 1654

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll the Justices of the Peace For the County of Sussex w[i]thin the Rape of Chichester.
The humble Petic[i]on of Joell Hebberden a poore distressed Souldier.
Humbly sheweth That y[ou]r poore Petic[i]oner was about Two yeares and a halfe last past Impressed and Transported for Ireland For the Service of the State, in w[hi]ch Service hee yo[u]r poore Petic[i]oner became vnserviceable and Impotent by Lamenes Lamenesse in his Lymbes, as Appeeres by the Passeport heerevnto Annexed, beinge Attested vnder the hands of Collonell Axtell and Collonell Fleetewood, by reson whereof hee is disabled to Worke for a Livelyehood for himself and his poore Wife vnto whome in the absence of yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner, you weare pleased to make some Weekely Allowance from the Parrish of Oveinge vnto her w[hi]ch hath byn discontinewed from her divers Weekes, &c.
Yo[u]r poore Petic[i]oner most humbly prayes yo[u]r good Wor[shi]pps that the said Allowance together w[i]th the Arreares thereof (if not an Increase therevnto) may be payed vnto yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner by the Ouerseers of the Parrish of Oveinge, Vntill you shall bee pleased to make some Further Allowance vnto yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner at the next gennerall Sessions of the Peace, eyther by grauntinge yo[u]r Petic[i]oner a Pension, or other Mayntenance as to yo[u]r good Wor[shi]pps shall bee thought fitt &c.
And yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner as in dutye bound, shall dayly pray &c.
