The petition of Jeremy May of Sittingbourne, Kent, 1654

<Jeremy May his petic[i]on.>
To the right wor[shi]pfull the Judge & Justices of the Peace at the Gen[er]all Quarter Sessions for the County of Kent assembled.
The most humble petic[i]on of Jeremy May.
Humbly Sheweth,
That yo[u]r said petic[i]on[e]r was about nine yeares since pressed from Sittingbourne in the s[ai]d County for the service of this Com[m]onweale vnder the Comand of Colonell John Birch, in w[hi]ch he p[er]formed all diligent service; vntill by sore wounds received therein, he was altogether disabled both to serve in the said service; and also to get ought towards a poor liuelyhood for himself; wife; and languishing familie; who are now at point of p[er]ishinging [sic.] for want of bread to put in their heards [sic.]
In Comisserac[i]on of whose deplorable condic[i]on he most humbly beseecheth yo[u]r wor[shi]pps even for Christs sake to relieve his vnexpressable wants, by speedy reliefe; in graunting of him an Annuall stipend out of the County stock, or otherwise; according as yo[u]r wor[shi]pps in yo[u]r wisdom shall seeme most meete.
For w[hi]ch as in duty, so in practice both he and his shall daily pray to God to reward yo[u]r wor[shi]pps Christian benevolence.
