The petition of Jasper Wintworth of Devizes, Wiltshire, 16 July 1661

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll his Ma[jes]t[y’]s Justic[e]s of Peace at the gen[er]all Quarter Sessions of the Peace holden at Warminster the xvith day of July 1661
The humble Petic[i]on of Jasper Wintworth late souldier in his late Ma[jes]t[y’]s service.
Humbly sheweth, That whereas yo[u]r Pet[itione]r, having ben borne & bredd vpp in the Borough of Devizes w[i]thin this Countie did, in the beginning of the late warres, become a souldier in his late Ma[jes]t[y’]s service, & continued in the same service.
In w[hi]ch service he received many wounds, (as appeareth by the signall markes in his flesh & bones) whereby he is the lesse able to vse his right hand & to vse his left arme, to the disabling of him to struggle in the world for his maintenance, or for the support of his wife & children, as in tyme past he hath done.
Yo[u]r Pet[itione]r humbly prayeth yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps to be pleased to graunt him a yearely Penc[i]on, to be paid vnto him out of the Treasury of this Countie; such as in yo[u]r wisedomes you shall thinke meete. And yo[u]r Pet[itione]r shall ever pray for yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps health & happynesse &c
To attest the truth hereof we the Maior and Inhabitants of the sayd Borough of Devizes have subscribed o[u]r hands
