The petition of Jane Jakeman of Devizes, Wiltshire, Hilary 1651

To the right Wor[shipfu]ll the Justic[e]s of the peace of the County of Wilts[hire]
The humble Petic[i]on of Jane Jakeman of the Devizes in the County aforesaid Widd[ow]
Sheweth
That yo[u]r Pet[itione]r with her husband & iii children went for some yeeres past into Ireland to the City of Corke & there lived in good & honest repute yo[u]r said Pet[itione]rs husband being servant to the Lord of Corke vntill the vnheard of Rebellion & Murther brake out in that nac[i]on by which yo[u]r Pet[itione]r with her husband & Children were inforced to leave house & land & all that they had & to returne into England & soe to the Devizes aforesaid where being settled yo[u]r Pet[itione]rs husband being Chirurgion did both dresse & give [illegible] Phisicke to many souldiers of my Lord Fairfax Army after the taking of the said towne & Castle & likewise was Chirurgion to that party that was drawne from thence against Farrington, & when my Lord Generall was to goe into Ireland to releive Dublin yo[u]r Pet[itione]rs Pet[itione]rs [sic.] husband & her eldest sonne being aboute xvi yeeres of age both listed themselves forth at service as Chirurgion & his Mate to the Regim[en]t & both went, but yo[u]r Pet[itione]rs husband died very shortely after the taking of Tredagh & left yo[u]r Pet[itione]r vi small Children & yo[u]r Pet[itione]rs sonne died aboute halfe a yeeres since soe that yo[u]r Pet[itione]r is altogether comfortles in a sad condic[i]on for want of mainten[a]nce for herselfe & children.
Wherefore humbly prayeth that in considerac[i]on of his faithfull service to the Parl[ia]m[en]t & her sad condic[i]on wherein she nowe is by reason of the death of her husband to allowe her such a yearly p[ro]porc[i]on out of the Comon Treasury of this County as to yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps shal be thought meete
And she shall ever pray &c
