The petition of Jane Griffin of Chichester, Sussex, April 1653

To the Righte Wor[shi]pp[fu]ll the Justices of the peace sittinge att Sessions at Chichester
The humble petic[i]on of Jane Griffin a poore widd[ow]
Humblie sheweth to yo[u]r wor[shi]pps that your petic[ione]rs husbande was a Soldier vnder the Comande of Capt[ain] Exton in the seruice of Ireland and about a yeere and a quarter since there hee dyed as a faithfull seruant and Soldier for the Parliam[en]t, And yo[u]r pet[itione]r at Christmas last att Arrundell preferred her petic[i]on at the Sessessions then and it was ordered 40 s. a yeere for your pet[itione]r:
But soe it is may it please your wor[shi]pps that your pet[itione]r is a very Lame Woeman and goeth with a Crutch and disinabled to gaine any liuelihood for a mayntenance for her selfe or her childe of three yeeres of age which shee lawfully had by her deceased husband
May it therefore please your good Wor[shi]pps to consider yo[u]r pet[itione]rs poore Condic[i]on and out of your goodnesse to allowe 40 s. a yeere more for and towardes the mayntenance of your poore pet[itione]rs Childe whose father faithfully discharged his dutie and sealed it with his blood
And yo[u]r pet[itione]r shall as in dutie bounde euer pray for yo[u]r euerlastinge happinesse of your Wor[shi]ppes &c:
