The petition of James Thickens of Leek, Staffordshire, 12 January 1657

To the Right Worshipfull the Justices of the peace at their Quarter Sessions houlden at Stafford greettinge

The humble petition of James Thickens of Leeke in this County of Stafford, Humbly Sheweth that whereas your petitioner hath bene a Souldier in the Parliaments Service, and was Maymed in the same service, and disabled soe that he was not any way able to get a Liverlyhoode neither for himselfe nor his fam[m]ely soe that hee was enforced formerly to put vp a petic[i]on to the Hon[ou]rable Bench, where hee had an Order from the Honn[ou]rable Judge Wylde for the Receipt of Nine pounds yearely for his Mayntainance which Order Mr George Thorlie hath and as yet it hath not been observed, but the Honn[ou]rable Bench formerly allowed a small pention vnto your petitioner and tould him he must take yt vntill more would be gotten, and he hath beene silent w[i]th the same vnto this pr[e]sent, But now heareing that the Treasurer for Maymed Soulders hath Monneyes in his hands to spare it doth animate your petitioner to move you once more in the same Cause desireing you to take it into your Considerac[i]on and hopeing you will be pleased to Commiserate his sad Condic[i]on and some way Order it that he may have somthing more allowed him that soe he may be further enabled to subsist, which will be a deed of Charity and deepley Engage your poor petitioner to pray for you.

Wee whose names are herevnder written doe here Certifie that the abovesaid James Thikens is a very poor man being Maymed in the Parliaments service And doe desire your Worshipes to allow him somethinge towards his maintainance accordinge to his petition.
