The petition of James Dawes, Kent, 1654

To the Wor[shipfu]ll the Justices of Peace att the Sessions holden att Maidstone in the County of Kent
The humble petic[i]on of James Dawes
Humbly sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]oner going out of this County a soldier in Collonell Stubbers Regiment against the Rebells in Ireland, continewing the said service the space of Four yeares and vpwards had by an vnhappy blowe one of his hands cut off in a skirmish with the Enemy for which disabilitie hee was dismissed to returne to his natiue Countrie for his releife
Wherefore hee being vtterly vnable to labour att his trade (which was a Glover) and destitute of other helpe for his livelihood hee humbly prayes that y[ou]r wo[rshi]pps wil be pleased to graunt him some annuall stipend or penc[i]on as hath been accustomed to soldiers maimed and yo[u]r petic[i]on[er] shall dayly pray &c.
The Tre[asure]r for the maymed sould[ie]rs to paie xx s. in Hand & a penc[i]on of iii li. Half yearlie start at Easter next:
The Certificate vppon w[hi]ch this penc[i]on was grounded I delivered to Mr Turner the Schoolmaster of Maidston. 18th. October 1658
