The petition of James Bartlet of Broadhempston, Devon, Michaelmas 1671
To ye right wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace of the County of Devon at the Generall Quarter Sessions holden for the said County.
The humble Petic[i]on of James Bartlet of Broadhempston in the said County sometime an Ensigne under Captaine Robert Austyn who dyed in Pendennis Castle.
Humbly sheweth. That yo[u]r poor Petic[i]oner was long a souldier in his late Ma[jes]ties service under the Comand of Captaine Philip Halse and afterwards an Ensigne under the Com[m]and of Captaine Robert Austin and Caryed his Colo[u]rs into Pendennis Castle, And yo[u]r Peticoner hath received severall wounds in his Body in the said service ag[ain]st Plymouth and Dartmouth (as by a Certificate hereunto annexed appeares) w[hi]ch to cure have bin Cos very Costly to him, and he hath long languished and yet doth Languish of those wounds by meanes whereof he hath bin inforced to expend all his substance not beinge willing to be Chargeable to others hath done his best indeavor to maintaine himselfe hitherto by his labor and helpe of his friends but is now become impotant an obiect of Charity and can no longer labor or subsist.
May it therfor please yo[u]r wor[shi]ps to consider yo[u]r poor petic[i]oners weake and feeble condic[i]on and to admit him to be a pensioner and to order hime some pension out of the County Stock for maymed souldiers towards his subsistence, Accordinge to the Statute in that case made and provided And yo[u]r poor petic[i]oner shall dayly pray for y[ou]r wor[shi]pps &c
