The petition of Hugh Cheswis of Marbury, Cheshire, Easter 1669

To the Right Wor[shi]p[fu]ll Sir Thomas Mainwaring K[nigh]t Baro[ne]tt And S[i]r Robertt Cotton K[nigh]t two of his may[jes]t[ie]s Justices off the peece and quorum: for the Hundred of Namptwich in the Countie of Chester the humble petic[i]on of Hugh Cheswis:
Hum[b]ly sheweth:
That yo[u]r peti[ti]on[e]r Hugh Cheswis hath beene A faithfull Souldier in the office of A Corporall in the Sarvice of the Late kinges wars Fiue yeares and halfe in England vnder the Com[m]and of Capt[ain] Thomas Cholmondeley and in which Sarvice Afores[ai]d yo[u]r poore peti[ti]on[e]r was maymed in boath of his hands and shot in to his thige As is yet Approued to bee Seene by which hee his much disinabled to Fallow his worke haueing A wife and children to mayntaine and Nothing to Subsist vpon but his owne hand Labo[u]r And haueing had but but one yeares pay when hee was A Souldier and by that Meanes yo[u]r Peti[ti]on[e]r and his wife and childeren is exposed to great Want; and yo[u]r Peti[ti]on[e]r did his Said May[jes]tis what good Sarvice Hee was able; and now yo[u]r Peti[ti]on[e]r is vnable to Fallow his worke As hee hath dunn by reason that hee is ould and his eye sight Fayles him: and yo[u]r Peti[ti]on[e]r hath A great charge and hath nothing To maintaine them but his owne hand Labour: yo[u]r peti[ti]on[e]r therefore Humble Prayeth that yo[u]r worships would please to take yo[u]r Peti[tio]on[e]rs case in to yo[u]r Charitable Considerac[i]ons and that yo[u]r worships would Please to Admitt him A Pention[e]r which was yo[u]r worships former promis to him that hee should bee in the roome of the next Pention[e]r that died which yo[u]r peti[ti]on[e]r hopes That yo[u]r Worships would admitt him to bee a pention[e]r.
And yo[u]r Peti[ti]on[e]r as in duty bounden will ever Pray &c
