The petition of Hugh ap Edward of St Asaph, Flintshire, c. 1662 to 1667

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll ye Justices of ye Peace of the County of Denbigh.
The Humble Petic[i]on of Hugh ap Edward of Llanhassaph in the County of Flint an old distressed souldier.
Humbly sheweth
That Whereas yo[u]r petic[i]oner hath served his late Ma[jes]ty King Charles ye 1st in ye late Warres for 4 yeares together vnder the Com[m]and of S[i]r John Owens as a Com[m]on souldier & hath been wounded & maimed in ye said service his right shoulder being struck & dislocated by scaleing ye Cittie of Leicester & afterwards he was taken prisoner at Naseby & carried to Lambeth house where he was detained (with others) above halfe a yeare & from thence refusing to take armes with ye Rebells he was banished out of the Land & was afterwards a sea souldier vnder ye Com[m]and of S[i]r Edward Broughton. In all which services & hardships he lost ye vse of his limbs & his health & is rendered incapable of earning his living, & was pressed for the said service out of Derwen parish, being then an Inhabitant of ye same, & never served under his Ma[jes]ties enemies or his late fathers & ye whole trueth of ye Premisses yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r is ready to depose upon oath if your wor[shi]pps require it. Now therefore yo[u]r humble Petic[i]on[e]r w[i]th all submission prayeth that having had (these 16 yeares ever since his Ma[jes]ties happy restauration) ye yearely Pension of twenty shillings as a Maimed Souldier yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps will be pleas’d to order the continuance of the same paym[en]t together with ye arrears thereof these three last quarters.
