The first petition of Henry Traunter of Hereford (St Owen’s Parish), Herefordshire, 1665 to 1668

To the wor[shi]ppfull William Edwines Esq[ui]r[e] Maior of the Citty of Hereff[ord], & to others the wor[shi]ppfull Justices of the peace of the said Citty:
The humble petic[i]on of Henry Traunter of the said Citty, Brickmaker Aged ninety one years, or thereabouts Chardged with a poore aged wife, & Children:
Humbly shewinge, That whereas after ye Scotts siedgeing this Citty his late Ma[jes]tie Charles the first of blessed memory dec[eased] with some of his Nobillity entring this Citty vpon humble supplication vnto his then Ma[jes]tie by yo[u]r petic[ione]r made had a verball & personall graunte from his Ma[jes]tie to build a small Cottage on the wast belonging to ye Castle of this Citty; w[hi]ch yo[u]r poore petic[ione]r to his Chardge of Fifty powndes at the least reared, & built, by his Ma[jes]ties graunte for yo[u]r petic[ione]rs Loyalty, & fidelity in ye late warrs to his Ma[jes]tie; w[hi]ch Tenement by yo[u]r petic[ione]r soe erected was by ye Com[m]aund of Wroth Rogers late Governor of the Castle & Citty of Hereff[ord] pluckt downe, demolished, & Carried to the Colledge of Herefford to repaire breaches, & ruines there to the vtter ruine of yo[u]r poore petic[ione]r & his Chardge:
That yo[u]r wor[shi]pps wil be pleased to order yo[u]r petic[ione]r ye next Fall of an Allmeshouse belonging to this Citty, or pr[e]sent weekely mainteinance, hauing belonged to this Citty Threescore years, & vpwards And yo[u]r petic[ione]r shall daily pray for yo[u]r wor[shi]pps &c
