The petition of Henry Traunter of Hereford (St Owen’s Parish), Herefordshire, 1664
To the wor[shi]ppfull James Elye Esq[ui]r[e] Major of the Citty of Hereff[ord] y[ou]r wor[shi]ppfull William Gregory Esq[ui]r[e] Deputy Steward of the said Citty & to others the Justices of peace of the said Citty
The humble petic[i]on of Henry Traunter of ye said Citty a poore laboureinge brickman very aged and impotent & vtterly decayed by the power of Gouernor Rogers in ye late troublesome tymes who gaue order to pull downe, take, sell, & carry away a small Tenement of yo[u]r petic[ione]rs built on ye Cittyes wast by graunte from his late Ma[jes]tie Charles ye first of blessed memory deceas[e]d for nothinge but yo[u]r petic[ione]rs fidelity to his Ma[jes]tie;
Humbly craueing in regard, & for that your petic[ione]r att severall Quarter Sessions formerly held in, & for the said Citty manifesting his lowe Condic[i]on both to your wor[shi]pps & precedent Majors of this Citty had his petic[i]on longe since filed in Court for ye graunte of ye next vacant Hospitall of any poore Allmesman dying within this Citty; there haveinge bin many poore since departed life; & your poore peticon[e]r hitherto waued vnsettled, & vnprovided of any relieffe att all; insoemuch that yo[u]r petic[ione]r beinge a very poore man of greate yeares, & past worke (haueinge spent most of his daies for the good of this Citty is like to be lost & vtterly perish;
That your good wor[shi]pps wil be pleased most favoureably to confirme yo[u]r former graunte with a Line of assured order of comfort for ye next Fall att S[ain]te Giles Hospitall; or as yo[u]r wor[shi]pps please within this Citty: & in the interim some weekely Allowance of relieffe out of ye parish of S[ain]te Owens wherein yo[u]r petic[ione]r for many yeares, hath & as yet liveth; And yo[u]r poore petic[ione]r shall daily pray &c
