The petition of Habell Stepney, Sussex, 7 October 1670

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll ye Justices of ye Peace for ye County of Sussex att ye Quarter Sessions holden at Lewes ye viith of October 1670.
Humbly Shewing ye causes why yo[u]r Petic[i]oner desires some reasonable maintenance
(1) hee is [from his] from his friends & acquaintance (2ly) hee is Ancient & his wife past any worke being of 70 y[ea]rs of Age (3ly): Impotent in his left Arme in his Ma[jes]ties Service (4ly) Noe p[ar]ish Willing to Entertaine him by reason of ye Act (5ly) hee hath noe Mony to purchase a Living, (6ly) Doct[o]r Barton hath putt him in Debt yt noe man will trust him
These things being Considered in a Xpian manner I hope yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps wil be pleased to grant an Order that I he may haue Indifferent meanes allowed vntill yt it shall please God to send him some Imploym[en]t according to his calling.
And yo[u]r Petic[i]oner shall ever pray &c, saying Vestrissimus ac Humillimus in Jehovah servulus,
