The petition of Gyles Smallen of North Bradley, Wiltshire, Trinity 1661

To the R[igh]t worshipfull, the kings Ma[jes]ties Justices, in Warminster, at the q[uar]ter Sessions, assembled.

The humble petic[i]on of Gyles Smallen of the p[ar]ish of North Bradley in the countie of Wiltes[hire] Clothweaver.

<Sheweth> that in or aboute the moneth of December, in the 19th yeere of the reigne of o[u]r late sou[e]reigne Lord Kinge Charles the first ou[er] England &c yo[u]r petic[i]oner beinge then prest by Henry Kippinge then ye Tythingman of Southweeke, in the said p[ar]ishe, for his Ma[jes]ties service afterwards listed vnder Captaine Edward Penruddocke, and beinge a foote souldior, served vnder the commaund of the said Captaine from the time hee was prest vntill after the retreate of his Ma[jes]ties army from Alsford fighte, vnto the Citye of Bristoll, where hee w[i]th others were drawne foorth, and listed vnder one Captaine Painter to relieve his Ma[jes]ties garison in Barkeley Castle in the countie of Gloc[ester] In w[hi]ch place it was yo[u]r petic[i]oners hap to bee shot in one of his legs since w[hi]ch time besides the payne, charge expence, yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner hath beene put to, for care hee hath beene and is vtterlie disabled to woorke at his Occupac[i]on to the vndooinge of himselfe, his poore wife & familye.

Wherefore yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner (since hee canne noe longer subsist w[i]thout reliefe) humbly prayeth yo[u]r worships to take into yo[u]r christian Considerac[i]ons this his distressed estate, and to allowe him some reliefe as to others in like case, hath beene administred
