The petition of George Hale of Knutsford, Cheshire, and Hugh Woodward of Rexon, Cheshire, 19 September 1660

To the right worshipfull S[i]r Peter Brookes And the rest of the Wo[rship]full Bench
The humble petic[i]on of George Hale of Lower Knutsford And of Hugh Woodward of [?Rexon]
Humbly sheweth
That whereas yo[u]r poore petic[i]oners George Hale afores[ai]d And Will[iam] Woodward brother to the affores[ai]d Hugh Woodward were hired souldiours vnder the Com[m]and of the Right Honorable Sir George Booth hired for little Pevor the sixth of August 1651 were routed fat Northwych and yo[u]r s[ai]d Petic[i]oners were promised by the Inhabitants afores[ai]d to haue p[ai]d them the sum of fourteene shillings a yeere and the day beeing Lost at Northwych their s[aid promise they vtterley denyed and would not fullfill In soe much that yo[u]r petic[i]oner George Hale was wounded and put to greate want and the s[ai]d Will[iam] Woodward was shot at the onset at Winington Bridge Nigh Northwych and Coming to Knutsford was met by some base mynded fellowes, was robed as hee came along the high way and the s[ai]d Will[iam] Wooward was Constrayned to rely vpon the Courtesy of Hugh Woodward brother to the s[ai]d Will[iam] Woodward who releiued yo[u]r s[ai]d souldiour for the space of a full halfe yeare and Could get nothing towards his reliefe dureing all the tyme and then dyed of the s[ai]d wound And the s[ai]d Hugh Woodward p[ai]d Twelue shillings towards the Cure of his s[ai]d wound
Yo[u]r poore petic[i]oners humbly prays yo[u]r worship to take it Into yo[u]r seriouse considerac[i]on and to giue ym some order whereby the s[ai]d pay May bee p[ai]d and and [sic.] the s[ai]d Twelue shillings for the Cureing of the wound and yo[u]r poore pet[i]c[i]oners
will ever pray
