The petition of Foulke ap Richard of Denbigh, Denbighshire, c. 1662 to 1667

To the Right Wor[shi]p[fu]ll the justices of the peace for the Countie of Denbigh.
The humble petic[i]on of Foulke ap Richard of Denbigh late shoemaker.
Sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]oner at the first rising of the Rebells in the kin{gdom of Eng}land against his late Ma[jes]tie of famous memorie did voluntarily retaine himselfe a priuat souldier vnder the Comaund of S[i]r Thomas Salusbury Knight & Barronet his one Companie & Continued there in his Regim[en]te during his life, & afterwards vnder ye Com[m]and of Major John Doulben for a longe season during w[hi]ch time he suffered seu[er]all ympr[i]so[n]m[en]ts & much sicknes, & was slitted in ye left eare besides seuerall banges bloes, & brusies & other enormities he receiued at ye enimies handes yt he languished in danger of his life, in the meane time his wife & small children suffered his great damages to her vtter vndoeing hauing in th[e] absence of her husband noe reliefe at all, And your petic[i]oner further sheweth that after his retorne he reteyned himself a souldier vnder ye Comaund of W[illia]m Salusbury Esq[uire] Gouernor of this Castle & Continued there faithfully during his time, & afterwards was forced to turne Cobler to maintaine his poore wife & children, disabled to followe his calling. The premisses Considered.
Yo[u]r petic[i]oner humbly praies yo[u]r good Wor[shi]ps to Comiserate his Condic[i]on & to graunt vnto him w[ha]t yearly penc[i]on yo[u]r wor[shi]ps shall thinke meete of the maymed souldiers moneys towards ye maintenance of his wife & children & yo[u]r petic[i]oner will ever pray &c.
