The petition of Folentine Stevens of South Wraxall, Wiltshire, 7 October 1656

To the Right wor[shipfu]ll the Justices assembled at the gen[er]all quarter quarter Sessions of the peace held att Marleborough the 7th of October 1656
The humble Petic[i]on of Folentine Stevens of South Waxall in the County
Sheweth
That yo[u]r Petic[i]oner hath form[er]ly served the Parlyam[en]t about seaven yeeres by sea & by land & since w[hi]ch tyme hath ben licensed by Collonell Eyres & other Justices of the peace of the County to keepe an Alehouse in the p[ar]ish, of South wraxall aforesaid in the Roade way from Say to Bath & Bristoll & Marshfeild & other places & that there is noe house of enterteynem[en]t in 5 or 6 miles nere the place where yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r dwelleth, for [illegible] of travaylers And that yo[u]r petic[i]oner never keept any disorders in his house butt allwayes gave Civill enterteynem[en]t to such as had occasion to passe that way yett yo[u]r petic[i]oners house is lately supprest [illegible] by Mr Aish as yo[u]r petic[i]oner supposeth [illegible] because it was informed vnto him that his house is w[i]thin three miles of a markett towne called Bradford, w[hi]ch will appeare to the Contrary by a Certificate herevnto annexed
May It therefore please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps to consider of the truth of the yo[u]r petic[i]oners certificate & graunte him a license for the sellinge of beere agayne from this Co[u]rt And yo[u]r petic[i]oner shall ever pray for yo[u]r wor[shi]pps &c
recomended to the Justices of that Division to consider of ye Certificate & license him yf they thinke fitt
