The petition of Ellen Jennings, Cheshire, 13 July 1652

To the ho[noura]ble Bench of Justices at the q[ua]rter sessions held at Namptwich for the County of Chester July 13th 1652
The humble petic[i]on of Ellen Jennings late wife of one Thomas Davies & now wife of Thomas Jennings who hath ben for many yeares & still is a listed souldier vnder the com[m]and of the wor[shipfu]ll Colonell Croxton
Sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]oners late husband Thomas Davies eleven yeares & more agoe went a voluntire in to Ireland & there s[e]rved as a souldier vnder the Com[m]and of Colonell Vavisor & there shortly after lost his life in the Parliam[en]ts [illegible] s[e]rvice, having left yo[u]r petic[i]oner in great distresse & charged w[i]th a yong Childe not then above a moneth ould w[hi]ch shee hath w[i]th great care & industry brought vp & mayntayned for eleven yeares past & more But yo[u]r petic[i]oner & her now husband being not well able to keepe the child any longer much lesse able to sett him to any trade wherby he may be for himselfe.
Humbly pray yo[u]r worships would be pleased to take yt into yo[u]r pious considerac[i]on & to grant them somthing (yf not for & towards yo[u]r petic[i]oners damages, yet for the setting forth of her late husbands said Childe to serve as an apprentice to a maister of some honest trade for his farther maintaynance & future lively hood & yo[u]r petic[i]oner will eu[er] pray &c
