The petition of Elize Potter of Hemyock, Devon, 1690

To their Ma[jes]ties Worshipp[fu]ll Justices of the peace att the Gen[er]all Quarter Sessions held att the Castle of Exon in & for ye County aforesaid
The humble petic[i]on of Elize Potter of Hemiocke in the County aforesaid miller
Humbly sheweth
That yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner faithfully served our late Soveraign Lord Kinge Charles the First during all the vnhappy civill wars some times as a foot souldier and at other times a Troop[er] And att Naseby Fight yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner was a Trooper in S[i]r Marmaduke Langdons Bragade of horse and was there shott in his legg and by meanes thereof maymed ever since And ‘tho for severall yeares hee with the assistance of his family endeavoured by the trade of a miller to gett a livelyhood yet now being very ancient about Eighty yeares of age is become altogeather vnable to doe anythinge at his said imployment
May it therefore please yo[u]r Worshipps to Grante vnto yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner some yearly pention out of the rates payable to the maymed souldiers of this County And yo[u]r petic[i]oner as in duty bound shall ever pray &c
