The petition of Elizabeth Lee of Stanthorne, Cheshire, Michaelmas 1651

To the right honorable they [sic.] Justices of Peace of the County Palatine of Chester the humble Petition of Elizabeth Lee of Stanthorne in the County aforesaid widdowe
Sheweth
That your distressed Petitioner hauing lost her husband in the late battail at Worcester by whose industry and labour shee and one tender child were supported hauing no other means of subsistence is, in all probablility lyable to susteyn extream want and misery except some releef may bee affoarded her husband dyd indebted fortie pounds not leauing assetts sufficient to discharg it by ten pounds. And her Condition is so low and poore that she hath not so much as the most contemptible Cottage to preserue her and her child from the iniury of the wheather but is altogether harborlesse & knows not what course to take to draw out her miserable lyfe.
May it therefore please your Honors vpon consideration of they [sic.] premisses to admitt your poore Petitioner into the number of they [sic.] Pentioners of this Countie as also to allow such other aduance as your Petitioner is informed accrews to other soldiers (her case being vnspeakeably lamentable) you would ingage me her in all humility to praie &c
