The petition of Elizabeth Jackson of Brinnington, Cheshire, 19 October 1648

To the Right Wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Ma[jes]t[y]s Justic[e]s of the Peace for the Countye of Chester.

The humble Petic[i]on of Elizabeth Jackson wyfe of Willi[a]m Jackson

Humbly sheweth

That yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]rs said husband being a very pore man and willing to doe service for the p[ar]liam[en]t ag[ain]st the late Complotters, inlisted himselfe a souldier for the Town[shi]p of Brynington vnd[e]r the Comand of Capt[ain] Hyde & went w[i]th his said Capt[ain] into Wales where yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r beleeves he is still.

That he left yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r & one small child & nothing at all to mayntayne them w[i]th but what she can acquire by her hand labour w[hi]ch is soe little that victuals being at soe great a price she is much straightned for necessary food onely left her to receive Fower pence by weeke of George Shuttleworth of Brynington aforesaid w[hi]ch he the same George was agreed & p[ro]missed to pay vnto yo[u]r said petic[i]o[ne]rs husband in p[ar]te of his sallery as souldier for that Towne, in regards that he the said George was pressed to have gon himselfe. But so it is Right wor[shi]p[fu]ll that he the said George Shuttleworth (although hee know the great distresse yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r is in & that her said husband left direcc[i]on for her to receive the same, yet he the said George refuseth altogether to give it vnto her & is now seaven weeks behynd, w[hi]ch though to be but a little, yet it wold doe her some refreshm[en]t being at great lack.

Her humble request therefore to this ho[noura]ble Bench is that yo[u]r wor[shi]ps wold please to take some such course w[i]th the said Shuttleworth as that he may be compelled not onely to paie her for the tyme past but alsoe for the tyme to come soe long as yo[u]r said petic[i]o[ne]rs husband shall contynue forth a souldier for the said Towne and yo[u]r poore petic[i]o[ne]r will ever pray &c

19nono die Octobris 1648

Ordered that the 4 d. p[er] weeke shal be paid according to the petic[i]on.
