The petition of Elizabeth Calloe, residence unknown, 21 October 1649

To his Ex[cellen]cie S[i]r Thomas Fairfax
The humble petic[i]on of Elizabeth Calloe the poore distressed widdow of Richard Calloe late a Troop[e]r in ye Parliam[en]ts service deceased.
Sheweth
That yo[u]r pet[itione]rs said husband hath faithfully served the Parliam[en]t from ye beginning of this vnhappie warre, And being a Trooper in Capt[ain] Walter Perryes Troope in Coll[one]l Butlers Regim[en]t vnder yo[u]r Ex[cellen]cies Command, hee received a Shott in his Arme-hole in ye service, whereof hee dyed,
That after yo[u]r pet[itione]rs Husbands decease, there being a Fortnights pay allotted to him, w[hi]ch was all ye pay hee ever received for his said service, ye Cornett of ye said Troope Mr Perry whoe had ye said Fortnights pay in his hands for yo[u]r pet[itione]r, paid her onely 20 s. thereof and deteyneth the other 15 s. from her, Alsoe Nicholas Dowding the Corporall deteyneth from yo[u]r pet[itione]r 10 s.
Now in regard there is in Arreare to yo[u]r pet[itione]rs said husband for his said service 20 li. & vpwards, whereof shee can haue noe Certificate out of ye Rolls.
Yo[u]r pet[itione]r humbly prayeth That yo[u]r Ex[cellen]cy would be pleased in comiserac[i]on of yo[u]r poore pet[itione]r & 2 Childrens distressed Condic[i]on to grant her a Noate vnder yo[u]r Ex[cellen]cies hand to ye said Cornett & Corporall Commanding them to pay yo[u]r pet[itione]r her iust moneys due, And to direct her for ye receiving of some p[ar]te of her husbands Arreares in such a way, As yo[u]r Ex[cellen]cy shall thinke fitt
And shee shall eu[er] pray &c.

I desire Mr Scawen to take the Peticon[e]rs low condic[i]on into considerac[i]on and to giue order for the procureing a Debenture for her husbands arreares and that she may receiue allsoe such part thereof as shall be convenient for her subsistance she being verie poor and necessitous.
