The petition of Edward Leigh of Harthill, Cheshire, Easter 1679

To the Right Wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of peace assembled at the Quart[e]r Sessions.
The humble Petic[i]on of Edward Leigh of Harthill
Humblie sheweth
That yo[u]r Petic[i]oner was a souldier vnd[e]r Sir Hugh Calvelay & yt vnd[e]r the Command of Collonel Hastings for the space of three yeares for his late Ma[jes]tie of famous memorie, and was sore wounded at Stafford Battle insomuch yt hee was left for dead, and yt it was a long time before hee cold be cured of those wounds, yo[u]r Petic[i]oner was three yeares alsoe in Beeston Cast[l]e vntill it was surrendered, yo[u]r Petic[i]on[e]r was alsoe at the fight at Swarson Bridge, as alsoe at the takeing of Lichfeild all along continueing true and loyall; yo[u]r Petic[i]oner alsoe was at the fight at Winington vnd[e]r the com[m]and of Captaine Leech, haveing beene a loyall & faithfull Subiect to his late Ma[jes]tie and his Ma[jes]tie yt now is;
May it therefore please yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps (the pr[e]mises considered) to com[m]iserate yo[u]r Petic[i]oners poore estate & low condition soe much, as to admitt yo[u]r poore and indigent aged Petic[i]oner to become a Pentioner, yt soe hee may therew[i]th be the bett[e]r sustained now in his old age, & yo[u]r Petic[i]oner as in duetie bound will ev[e]r pray for yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps health & happines long to Continue.
