The petition of Edward Bruin of Spreyton, Devon, 1 October 1688

To the right worshipfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of th[e] peace of & for the County of devon at this pr[e]sent Sessions held for the said County at the Castle of Exon
The humble petic[i]on of Edward Bruin of the p[ar]ish of Spreton in the said County
Sheweth that yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r in the Late warr in the raigne of Kinge Charles the first of euer blessed memory, serued his Ma[jes]tie as A Souldier vnder the Com[m]and of Colonell Tremaine & Leiueten[an]t Colonell Yeo, for the space of fower yeeres, dureing which tyme he neuer deserted his Ma[jes]ties seruice & at A fight in Torrington he receiued A wound in his head, And was Likewise in that Seige in pendennis Castle in Cornwall, where he Endured much hardshipp by meanes whereof he is now altogether vnable to gett his Liuelyhood but is Enforced to beg releiffe of the p[ar]ish,
wherefore yo[u]r poore petition[e]r humbly prayeth yo[u]r worships to take the pr[e]mises into Considerac[i]on & Afford him such yeerely pension as this Court shall thinke fitt for A maimed Souldier for his better Liuelyhood & Maintaynance & yo[u]r petitio[ne]r shall euer pray &c

Wee the Church wardens & ouerseers of the poore of the p[ar]ish of Spreton doe Certify that wee doe giue Edward Bruin of o[u]r p[ar]ish one shilling weekely which wee doe thinke is Sufficient releiffe according to his pr[e]sent necessity
