The petition of David Merrill, Devon, 1660

To the right wor[shipfu]ll The Justices Assimbled att This Generall Sessions helden for this County of Devon.
The humble petic[i]on of Dauid Merrill
Humbly sheweth
That whereas your pet[itione]r was Maimed in the late vnhappy warrs wherby he was disabled from his Liuelyhood. being a poore man and haueing a wife & Charge to maintain, did Obtaine a Pention of 40 s. p[er] yeare, (but soe itt is may itt please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps) that your pet[itione]r is not able to subsist by & with the same. but is like vtterly to perrish vnlesse yo[u]r wor[shi]pps mercy extend towards him
In tender Commisserac[i]on of the pr[e]misses yo[u]r poore pet[itione]r humbly prayeth your wor[shi]pps out of yo[u]r wounted Clemency to be graciously pleased, to augment & increase your pet[itione]rs said Pention being all yt he hath to liue vpon. & without w[hi]ch he is like vtterly to per[is]h.
And yo[u]r poore pet[itione]r shall euer pray. for yo[u]r wor[shi]pps &c.
