The petition of David Evans, City and County of Canterbury, 20 January 1652

To the right worshipfull Maior Aldermen and com[m]on Councell in this Courte of Burgimote assembled.
The humble petic[i]on of David Evans of this Citty Corrier
Humbly sheweth
That whereas yo[u]r poore peticoner being lately returned from the service of Scotland and findeing at home a poore p[er]ishing wife and one Child who fr by reason of long sicknes did wast all the goods she had is now dead in extreame poverty and yo[u]r poore peticoner a not havinge any thing left whereby to sustaine himselfe & one Child [illegible] is now in a miserable & p[er]ishing condic[i]on vnles yo[u]r worships take some speedy course for his reliefe who hath not beene in a bed since his returne from the s[ai]d service neither hath any or other houshold
May it therefore please yo[u]r wor[shi]ps (the pr[e]misses considered) according (to yo[u]r accustomed clemency & pitty to com[m]iserate his sad & deplorable Condic[i]on & p[ro]vide him a smale meanes to buy him some working tooles That hee may settle himselfe in his former course of living That soe he may be inabled by his honest indeavour to sustaine himselfe & poore Child & yo[u]r poore Peticoner as bound in duty shall ever pray &c.
