The petition of Captain Roger Beale, Earl of Carnarvon’s Regiment, May 1660

To the Right hono[ura]ble S[i]r Edward Nicolas Kn[igh]t Principle Secretary of State.
The humble petic[i]on of Capt[ain] Rog[e]r Beale
Most humbly sheweth That yo[u]r pet[itione]r being turn’d out of his Purs[e]rs place & Imprisoned at Hull & escaping thence came to Notingham & tooke armes vnd[e]r ye Earle of Carnarvon & at Edghill was shot in ye side & in ye hand & at Newbery was shot in ye shoulder & at Exeter was shot in ye necke & taken lyinge 13 weekes in Prison & then was made Capt[ain] of a shipp by S[i]r Jo[h]n Penington at Bristoll & after yt Controuler of ye Traine of Artillery vnd[e]r Prince Maurice & at ye last Newbery battle was shot in ye legg part of all w[hi]ch was knowne vnto yo[u]r hono[u]r And then went to Hereford & in ye Seidge was one of ye Capt[ain]s of ye Reserue, & was w[i]th his sacred Ma[jes]tie at Worcester being then stript & imprisoned & twice since & hath lost & spent all w[i]th his Lymbes haueing nothing left to support yo[u]r pet[itione]r in his age is like to perish & had not one penny of pay
May it therefore please yo[u]r hono[u]r as you haue bin a great benefactor & supporter vnto yo[u]r pet[itione]r he humbly beseecheth yo[u]r hono[u]r to continue in yo[u]r goodnes in assisting & helping yo[u]r pet[itione]r to some place in his Ma[jes]t[y’]s house, Nauy, Custome house or any other Imploym[en]t whereby yo[u]r pet[itione]r may liue & dye in his sacred Ma[jes]t[y’]s seruice.
And as in duty bound yo[u]r pet[itione]r shall daily pray &c
