The petition of Bartholomew Monk of Milton Abbot, Devon, 1683

To the Hon[oura]ble Bench att the Generall Quarter Sessions of the peace holden att the Castle of Exon for the County of Devon the humble petition of Bartholomew Monk of the parish of Milton Abbott w[i]thin the said County
Humbly Sheweth that your said Petitioner was a servitour in the late unhappy warrs under the command of captain Bidlake Captain Powell and Major Tremaine in the Regiment of S[i]r Nicholas Slaning K[nigh]t in the service of o[u]r Late Soveraign Lord King Charles the first of ever blessed and glorious memory, and continued in that service during the warrs, neither did he ever take up arms against his said Majesty or his Majesty that now is, And that he was shott in divers parts of his body in the said Service, and is now Maimed Indigent aged sickly and disabled in body for work; Wherefore his humble request is to your honours, that some pension may be allowed him towards his better livelyhood out of the Treasury for this County, And your petitioner shall ever pray &c.
